Vol. 4 – The Beginning of WBSJ

Hi there! I'm Naomi, the Founder and Director of Branches & Knots.
This time, I’d love to share the story of how my journey with the WBSJ rain boots began — a story that still makes my heart warm every time I think about it.

The Boots That Caught My Eye

When I was brainstorming ideas for my new business, there was one product that kept shining in my mind — the rain boots from Japan.
They were made by WBSJ (Wild Bird Society of Japan), a non-profit organization dedicated to bird conservation.

Their design was simple yet incredibly charming. I thought, these boots would be perfect for rainy Vancouver — people will love them!
Light, flexible, and durable — they were made for bird watchers walking through muddy fields, inspired by Japan’s rice paddies.

You could roll them up and tuck them in your bag when not in use. Each pair was handmade from 100% natural rubber, with no petroleum-based plastics. And even better — part of the proceeds supports bird protection activities. 🌏

There was truly nothing else like them. I just knew — I had to bring these boots to Canada.

The First Call

When I decided to start Branches & Knots, I began reaching out to brands I admired.
The very first company I wanted to contact was WBSJ.

So, with my heart pounding, I made an international call to Japan.
“Hello, I’m a distributor based in Canada,” I said nervously. “I’ve just started my company, but I’d love to introduce your rain boots in Canada!”

The person on the other end replied gently,
“I’m sorry, but we don’t handle any exports.”

I thanked them and hung up.
But a week later, I couldn’t stop thinking about it — so I called again. 😂

“Hello again! It’s me — the new distributor from Canada! Have you perhaps changed your mind?”
They smiled through the phone, “I’m afraid we still don’t export.”
I thanked them again and hung up — but I still couldn’t give up. 😂 😂

Third Time’s the Charm

Gathering all my courage, I called one more time.
“I’m so sorry to bother you again,” I said. “I’ll handle all the extra paper work for you, so it won’t cause you any trouble. Could you please reconsider?”

There was a pause.
Then came the words I’ll never forget:
“…Alright. You’ve won me over. Let’s do it.”

Oh my god!! Really? I danced around my room. 💃
That moment — that connection — I can still feel it vividly. My heart was overflowing with gratitude.

How Everything Connected

Back then 21 years ago, I never imagined I’d start my own business.
When I came to Canada, my English wasn’t great, so I went to ESL school, then Business College, where I earned a Diploma in International Trade (FITT). I was interested in international trade, and somehow I felt it might be useful.

I didn’t know it then, but that knowledge would later help me handle WBSJ’s first-ever export.
It reminded me — in life, nothing is wasted, and everything connects eventually.

13 Years Later

Little by little, the orders grew.
Even stores from the U.S. began ordering.
Today, our team of five still handles everything — Big thank to the team! — from handling incoming and outgoing shipments, modeling and photography to graphic design and video creation for promotion and marketing.

We do it all ourselves because we believe our hands and hearts carry the message better that way.

For 13 years now, WBSJ Rain Boots have been our best-selling item, loved by so many.
We’ve worked with about 60 retailers so far — some stopped after COVID, but many still carry them to this day.

Every year, the sales are still growing! Each one reminds us how grateful we are for this partnership.

A Toast in Japan

When I recently visited Japan, I finally had drinks with the WBSJ team for the first time — after 13 years of working together! 🍻

The person who first said “yes” to me all those years ago told me something I’ll never forget:
“I choose our partners by intuition. You had no track record back then, but I felt you would take good care of us. Now, Branches & Knots is one of our longest and most important partnerships.”

It was so nice to hear that. All those years of love and persistence were worth it.

It's so nice that I could share the story of how WBSJ began after 13 years— with the same care and gratitude that started it all.

Vol. 4 – WBSJのはじまり

こんにちは、Branches & KnotsのFounderでDirectorのNaomiです。
今回は、私とWBSJレインブーツとの出会い、そして始まりの物語をお届けします。

心をつかまれたレインブーツ

新しいビジネスの構想を練っていた頃、ずっと気になっていたのが日本のレインブーツでした。
それが、WBSJ（日本野鳥の会） の出しているブーツでした。

なぜかなんとも惹かれて、雨の多いバンクーバーで絶対喜ばれる！と直感で思いました。
軽くて柔らかくて丈夫。日本の水田からヒントを得たデザインで、素足で作業しているような快適さ。

使わないときはくるくる丸めてバッグにIN。
しかも、**ナチュラルラバー100％**で、石油系のプラスチックは一切なし。
そのうえ、売上の一部は野鳥保護活動に使われます。🌏

こんなブーツ、世界中どこを探してもない。
「これは絶対にカナダに紹介したい！」と強く思いました。

はじめての電話

Branches & Knotsを立ち上げると決めて、最初に連絡したいと思ったのがWBSJでした。
ドキドキしながら日本に国際電話をかけてみる。

「私、カナダのディストリビューターです。まだ始まったばかりの会社ですが、御会のレインブーツをぜひカナダに紹介したいのです」

担当者の方は優しく、
「申し訳ありませんが、弊会は輸出は一切していないのです」　おっと。。。

「わかりました。ありがとうございます。」と電話を切る、が、
一週間後、どうしても諦めきれず、もう一度電話（笑）

「何度もすいません、気持ちは変わられませんか？」
「申し訳ないのですが、輸出はしていないのです。」

それでも、まだ諦めきれない私。😂 😂

三度目の正直

三度目、勇気を出してもう一度。
「何度も本当にすみません。貿易業務はこちらで手配します、御会にはできるだけご負担をかけないようにします。どうかご検討いただけませんか？」

しばらくの沈黙の後、
「……わかりました。もう根負けです。やりましょう！」

きゃー！✨　まじでー💖　一人で小躍り。
すごく嬉しかった。気持ちは通じるのですね。

そしてそれからお取引が始まりました。

つながっていく

２１年前、カナダに来た時、英語がうまくなかったのでESL（語学学校）に通いました。その後Business Collegeに行きそこでForum for International Trade Training (FITT)というDiplomaを取得しました。そこで貿易の知識を付けました。その時は将来自分でビジネスをするなど夢にも思ってもおらず、貿易に興味があったのと、何となく役に立つ気がしてそのコースを選びました。

野鳥の会では輸出をされたことがなかったので、まあ私もなかったのですが（笑）、お互い素人で手探りの中、私が学校で学んだ知識がちょっとだけ役立ちました。あとのほとんどはやりながら調べて実践で学びました。学校行っててよかったのは知識だけじゃなくて、できるという勘違いに近い自信を持てたことかもです！

こうやって人生には偶然はなく無駄もなくつながっていくのですね。伏線回収です！（笑）

あれから12年

少しずつオーダーが増え、アメリカからも注文が入るようになりました。
私たちは今5人のチームで、写真撮影からデザイン、ビデオ制作、シッピング作業まで全て自分たちで行っています。

私たちの手ですべて行われるからこそ、心が伝わると信じています。

WBSJのレインブーツは、１３年間ずっと私たちのベストセラー。
お店で人気なのはもちろん、Wholesaleでもこれまで約60店舗が取り扱ってくれ、現在も多くのRetailerに支えられています。
WBSJの商品には本当に助けられてきました。山あり谷あり、今までやってこれた大きな貢献者です。

日本での乾杯

先日日本に帰ったとき、初めてWBSJの方々と飲みに行きました。🍻
13年もお取引していて初めてです。

そのとき担当者の方が言ってくださった言葉が心に残っています。
「取引する会社は直感で選びます。Branches & Knotsさんは始めたばかりで実績はなかったけど、大切に扱ってもらえると感じたので決めました。大会社でも違うと思ったらお断りしてるんです。」

「今では一番長く、そして大切な取引先のひとつです」と。

そんなことを言ってもらえるのー（泣）
これまでやってきたことが報われてしまった。

これからも、私たちの手からノースアメリカの人たちへ、
このブーツを丁寧に届けていきたいと思います。
